West Midland Safari and Leisure Park is based in Bewdley in Worcestershire and has been voted the most popular family attraction in the West Midlands. The park holds over 165 species of exotic animals and the 4 mile safari contains approximately 600 animals from Europe, North America, Africa and Asia.

The Brief

To sell on-site West Midlands Safari Park wanted to create a strong see-through envelope that could contain wildlife photographs. The photographs would be sold at the park and the envelope needed to provide protection and also act as a marketing tool. The visibility of the photographs inside would act as a visual stimulus to attract others to buy. 10,000 envelopes needed to be created by hand so it was a significant project.

The Challenge

The main challenge we faced was in determining the size, strength and thickness of the envelope so that it could both protect and display the photographs. The envelope needed to be hard-backed and be made of a translucent material to aid visibility.

Scoring, which is the act of creasing paper, would be a challenge for this project because translucent material is prone to crack easily.

The Solution

Based on the precise measurements supplied by West Midlands Safari Park, a translucent material was chosen that could subtly reveal the images inside. The envelope was hard-backed with cardboard to provide suitable strength and text was printed onto the bottom of the envelope – ‘your exclusive collection of limited edition wildlife prints from West Midland Safari Park’

The scoring was painstakingly applied so that no cracking took place and then all 10,000 envelopes were put together by hand to ensure that the finish was perfect.

The result was a high quality translucent envelope that reflected the exclusivity of the contents and West Midlands Safari Park were thrilled with the end product.
